The celebrity hairstylist, who calls himself a “hair artist”, has worked with many A-list Bollywood celebrities like Janhvi Kapoor. Deepika PadukoneAlia Bhatt, Alaya F, Sharvari, Taapsee Pannu, Katrina Kaif, Tara Sutaria, Anushka Sharma, among others. Needless to say that she is a well-known name in the hair industry.
During a recent conversation with indianexpress.comThakur talks candidly about her work, shares her experience working with this outlet Katrina Kaif And Nayantara For Her Bridal Looks, Why Deepika Padukone The easiest celebrities to work with are what happens when an actor clashes with ideas about what their hair should look like, and why hairstylists aren’t credited as vocally as they should be.
When did you start your journey as a child artist? Do you remember your big Bollywood break?
I started my journey at the age of 20, when I was pursuing my graduation in Mass Media. At the time, I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but a cousin of mine was a hairstylist. He has a great influence on me as I have spent a lot of time in his salon. I used to see people go with so much confidence because of a simple change in hairstyle. It stuck with me, because I thought salon stylists had the power to make people look and feel amazing about themselves.
This inspired me to take up hairstyling as a career. Once I started, I absolutely loved it. my first big bollywood break Huma Qureshi, When I was a fresher, she trusted me to style my hair for a few events. When I was still learning, we bonded because of our energy and were able to work together after a long time.
You call yourself a hair artist, not a hair stylist; What is the difference between the two?
There is no difference in this. This is my way of looking at things. Ever since I was little, I was always painting, sketching and singing like an artist. I was inclined towards the creative field and whatever I do, I do it with a lot of passion and love. I treat it like an art. Hair styling is also an art for me, so I call myself a ‘hair artist’ instead of a ‘stylist’.
You have recently designed the look of Jhanvi Kapoor coffee with karan appearance; Take us through the process.
Taking you through this process wouldn’t be ideal because it was absolutely insane! It was such a memorable day, because we had a great time. We had a blast, because we were in such a good mood and behaving like we weren’t really working. We were ordering food and chilling on the sets. We did something just for fun and it turned out beautiful. The response was amazing and I think she looked gorgeous. It was a smooth, creative, collaborative process.
How do you feel when she sat comfy on the couch and did an ‘updo’ during rapid-fire rounds, and even apologized to you on camera?
I wanted to kill him! (laughs) Jokes apart, we put together such a cute look for her, so when she pulled her hair up in an updo, my heart sank. But when I saw the episode from the perspective of the audience, it made sense to me. She wanted to prepare herself for the rapid-fire round and that was her way of doing it. Just like boys raise their arms before doing anything; This is Jhanvi’s way of saying ‘Bring it on’. I’m glad she did, because that’s exactly what she is – fun, easygoing and cute.
You have worked with many Bollywood A-listers. Who has been the easiest to work with in terms of accepting your vision?
I would say Deepika [Padukone], because one thing I love about him is that he has complete faith in the artists and their creative process. She gives them the freedom to do whatever they want. I think every artist deserves this freedom.
So, an actor who is most experimental and willing to try new looks would be…
I would say Deepika, because she is someone who is ready to experiment, and honestly, a treat to work with!
What are some lesser known facts and myths about hair styling?
The first myth is that people believe that hairstyling is not a lucrative career. The truth is that this career has given me everything I wanted or dreamed of. I have seen this happen to my students in the past as well. They are happy to do what they love. I met him when he was a fresher and he has really excelled.
This career is a continuous learning experience. Learning never stops and the art gets better with more and more practice. The more fluid your creative process, the more confident you will be.
Do you create a look with makeup? What factors determine how to style hair?
It’s a creative-but-collaborative process, where we come together to create a look for the celebrity. The event the celebrity is attending helps us plan the look/s.
What role does regular hair care play when it comes to styling? How do you style or repair damaged hair?
hair care plays a very important role. Regular hair care means shampoo, conditioner, leave-on conditioner and serum – this can also be called home care. Now, one has to choose a suitable shampoo and conditioner for their hair type. For example, those who have fine hair should choose a shampoo that is not heavy so as not to weigh down the hair. The right home care is essential to get the desired results.
When it comes to styling damaged hair, even before I start the process, I use a lot of nourishing, moisturizing products to give hair a healthy shine so that it looks like it’s healthy. I use products that do not contain too many chemicals and which are not harmful. It is advisable to stick to organic products. Even trimming damaged hair/split ends can be a great way to save hair.
You styled Katrina Kaif’s hair for her wedding with Vicky Kaushal. Tell about the experience.
It was such a beautiful experience and so easy too. Katrina wanted everything super organized for her wedding so that she could enjoy the big day. Before the wedding, the entire team – the stylist, makeup artist and I, came together to create the look along with the bride.
She was totally involved in conceptualizing her looks. We also created a marriage document where all the forms were present, and that included a thorough breakdown of each. On the day of the ceremony, we just referenced the document and knew exactly what we needed to do. This made the process seamless. It was a great initiative from Katrina and I wish every bride to be like this as it makes the process more fun.
You also worked with Nayantara in her wedding look…
What a lovely, lovely and friendly bride she was. She gave me and Puneet (makeup artist Puneet B Saini) the freedom to do whatever we wanted to do. He trusted us and our process was great! She and her husband make such a lovely couple!
What happens when there is a conflict of opinion between what you want for the client/actor and how they want to appear?
interesting question; It happens a lot. An actor or an artist always has his own vision. For example, when I go for a job, I have my own vision of what I want to make. But maybe, she is in a different mood and wants to look a certain way. So it cannot happen unless it is a collaborative process. We are all working towards the same goal be it brand, script or story. I try to balance the requirement of the script/brand and what the actor wants.
And finally, why do you think there’s so little recognition for all that hair styling effort?
This is because hair is a very subtle form of art. It is not something that is in front of you. For example, when you talk about styling (clothing), it is very clear. It is the same with makeup as it contains many ingredients like lip colour, blush, lashes etc. But, for example, you get your makeup and styling done, but you don’t do your hair—you get a just-out-of-bed look. Imagine what it would look like! I say it is a subtle form of art, but an important one, because it complements every form and brings it together.
