‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 3: Ending Explained, Your Long-Standing Questions Answered

Binging has completed its 3rd season Umbrella Academy On Netflix? It was the next round of saving the world, but this time the approach — and the stakes — were a little different. The Hargreaves brothers seem to be successful in preventing the entire universe from collapsing. But the results? They are understandably complicated.

What is Kugelblitz (and how do you spell it)?

In Episode 5, you’ll find the full explanation of this season’s equivalent of big bad (minus the initial antagonism of Sparrow Academy and the eventual trio of Guardians). In short, the Kugelblitz, which looks like an orange ball of energy, randomly precipitates matter through time and space until all of existence turns black. This black hole is the universe’s answer to the Grandfather Paradox, created by Sissy’s superpowered son Harlan.

In season 2, Victor meets Sissy in Dallas in 1963 and the pair fall in love. When saving Harlan from drowning, Victor accidentally gave him some of his powers. In the season 2 finale, Victor believed he had saved Harlan from exploding by absorbing his powers, but the altered Harlan retained them for the rest of his life.

On October 1, 1989, Sissy died of cancer, the same day the Hargreave sisters were all inexplicably born. Harlan’s grief bound her to Victor, whom she always wished would return to them. This contact caused Harlan to release a burst of energy that found Victor’s closest connection at the time: his mother. Harlan accidentally killed her along with the mothers of the other Hargreaves brothers. This resulted in the Grandfather Paradox – in this altered timeline, the siblings were never born. When they jump forward in time from the 60s, they end up in an altered 2019 where their pasts have been erased and Sparrow Academy is the main superhero show in town.

Luther and Klaus are sacrificed (but that won’t bring them down)

The Hargreaves’ (and the Sparrows’) adoptive father gave Klaus hope that he would treat the brothers with more love and care. He literally revealed a new layer in season 2: Beneath that tough exterior lies a lizard-like blue alien.

In the penultimate episode of season 3, we see that this alien has a blade-like arm that he uses to stab Luther to death. This is part of the tactic he used earlier to bring the brothers together. Then, as Kugelblitz collects Hotel Obsidian (later revealed to be Hotel Oblivion), he sacrifices Klaus, closing the door in his face as the remaining seven brothers escape. There’s a lot to change his ways: Cold-hearted Reginald is concerned with the right number of sisters needed to rebuild the universe.

Thankfully, after some convincing, Klaus returns from the afterlife to save his siblings in a battle with the Guardians, using his powers to briefly summon Luther at the ideal time.

Lila is pregnant – this time for real

When Lila drops Stanley off at Diego’s door, we see Diego grow up and finally hug his new found son. Only later does Lila reveal that Stanley is not actually her son, but his wife Trudy’s (unfortunately, Stan gets Kugelblitzed). He “borrowed” Diego to see if he was willing to look after his real son. That’s right — Lila is currently pregnant with Diego’s unborn son, and they can only save him if they defeat the Guardians and rebuild the universe.

Allison commits a robbery once

Allison’s arc this season saw her lose patience with being beautiful all the time, especially after the racial discrimination she faced during the 1960s American civil rights movement. After losing her husband Raymond Chestnut in the past, she discovers that her daughter Claire no longer exists in the altered present. Tired of the hand touching him, he leans into all his powers and finds that (with the help of Harlan’s residual energy) he can influence people without saying, “I heard a rumor…”.

He takes another step out of character by making a deal with Reginald to do whatever it takes to get Claire (and potentially Raymond) back. Basically, it involves trying to convince the other siblings to fight the dangerous Guardians and reset the universe.

Seven bells to rebuild the universe

This time, all one of the sisters has to do is press the literal reset button to save the world. In the lobby of Hotel Obsidian — later revealed to be Hotel Oblivion, a giant machine built by the man who first created the universe — seven stars are visible across the floor. The remaining seven siblings, except for Allison, rely on these “calls” to create a sigil that uses the particles inside their bodies as fuel. Meanwhile, Reginald alters the machine’s settings, which may explain why the universe hasn’t returned to the expected normal. To stop the brothers from being drained to death, Allison kills Reginald, then decides to hit the big red reset button anyway.

What happened to everyone?

With the universe back to “normal”, Allison gets exactly what she wants: Claire and, inexplicably, Raymond. Is she just a figment of his imagination? He had interacted with her before when she was under high stress. Or did he really travel from 1963 to 2019?

Luther returns, but he’s not the same — he’s no longer an ape. None of the brothers have any more powers. One thing that hasn’t changed: Ben is still the evil version of the Sparrows. Luther desperately runs to find his love, Sloane, who may still exist somewhere in the reconstructed world, not as part of Sparrow Academy. The rest of the siblings go their separate ways.
