Disgraced South Carolina legal heir, Alex Murdaugh, lured his wife to their family home before executing her and their son last summer.
Murdaugh, 54, told his wife that his 81-year-old father was on his deathbed and needed to see him before he passed.
Maggie Murdaugh, 52, refused her husband’s request and reluctantly agreed to visit him on their 1,770-acre estate in the small town of Islandton.
On the way home, Magee sent a text to a friend alleging that Murdaugh’s behavior was ‘fishy’ and that he was ‘up to something,’ a law enforcement source told People magazine on Friday.
Maggie and her son, Paul, were shot and killed moments after she arrived at the estate on June 7, 2021.
Murdoch was officially charged with their murders on Thursday. The one-time legal heir was indicted by a grand jury on two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
The indictment alleges he shot Maggie with a rifle and Paul, 22, with a shotgun at the estate.

Murdoch and Maggie had hit a rough patch in their marriage and were living separately at the time of her murder.
She was staying at the family’s beach house on Edisto Island, about an hour from the estate, when Murdough told her the health of her father, Randolph Murdough III, had declined.
Police sources claim that Murdoch asked Maggie to meet him at the estate so they could say their goodbyes to Randolph.
While she initially refuses to go to the property, he suggests they meet at the hospital where Randolph is being treated.
Maggie is somehow convinced to meet at the property, where she plans to drive Murdaugh to the hospital in her own vehicle. But he was murdered before he had a chance to meet Randolph.

Maggie and Paul were killed outside a dog kennel on the property before they had a chance to go to hospital (pictured). Paul was shot twice with a shotgun and Maggie was shot multiple times with an assault rifle.
Thirteen months earlier, Murdaugh told police he found the bodies of his young son and his wife in the family’s hunting lodge by a dog kennel at 10 p.m.
In audio of the 911 call he made at 10:07 p.m., he can be heard loudly telling the dispatcher: ‘I need the police and an ambulance right away. My wife and child were badly shot.’
People reported that Maggie was shot shortly after arriving at the property, alleging that she was driving her car as she approached the kennels where Paul was standing. He was taking a photo of a friend’s dog watching.
Paul was shot twice – once in the head and once in the chest. Magee was shot multiple times by an assault rifle. Their gunshot wounds were believed to be consistent with ‘execution-style’ murders, reports said.
According to multiple sources, Paul’s body was found partially inside one of the kennels, while his mother’s was several feet away, leading investigators to believe she ran away from her killer before being murdered.
At least two of her gunshot wounds are believed to have been inflicted while she was on the ground.
Once a prominent legal scion, Alex Murdaugh resigned from the family’s Hamptons-based law firm in September. The firm later claimed that Murdough had embezzled company funds, and at least one of Murdough’s former colleagues brought suit against him. In the immediate aftermath of the gruesome discoveries, Murdoch’s family and lawyers were staunch in their defense of the man and his marriage.
According to lawyer Dick Harpootlian, Murdoch had an ‘ironclad alibi’ and his marriage to Maggie was ‘full of love’. But in the intervening months, a very different picture has emerged, casting doubt on both claims.
His possible motive for killing his wife and son has not been confirmed, but at the time of their deaths, Murdaugh — a lawyer — was sinking into debt due to an addiction to opioids.

Paul also got the family into legal trouble. In 2019, he was driving a boat when it crashed, throwing 19-year-old Mallory Beach overboard. He died in the accident and Paul was later found to be drunk.
In the months following the murders of Maggie and Paul, Murdaugh was kicked out of his law firm after he claimed to have embezzled millions of dollars over the years.

“Today is one more step in a long process for justice for Maggie and Paul,” South Carolina Law Enforcement Division Chief Mark Keel said in a statement.
Murdaugh, who has been in jail since October, has been charged with insurance fraud, theft, lying to police and several other crimes.
He is accused of paying to shoot a man in September of last year so that his surviving son, Buster, could collect on a $10 million insurance policy.
Curtis Smith, allegedly a hit man hired by Murdaugh, ignored the job, firing a shot that only grazed him.

The assassination attempt came a day after he was forced out of his law firm for allegedly embezzling millions of dollars.
Murdaugh is also accused of pocketing a $4 million settlement intended for relatives of a family housekeeper who died in the Murdaugh home in the fall of 2018.
He has pleaded not guilty to all previous charges and is currently in jail on $7 million bond. It’s unclear whether an additional bond will be added to the murder charge.
The Murdaugh family has deep roots in law enforcement in South Carolina. Murdough’s father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all served as district attorneys.
