What is happening
I usually wear an Apple Watch. But for a few weeks I tested a hybrid watch called Withings ScanWatch Horizon.
Why it is important
Smart watches are not cheap. You need to know what you are getting for your money and whether the alternatives are worth investing in.
GreatThere are three things you should do well: avoid getting your hands dirty all the time , follow your health indicators and look beautiful on your wrist. But that’s not all is the same. Some replace the phone better, while others look more like a regular watch. This is the biggest difference between traditional smart watches (e.g. ) and hybrid smart watches, e.g. .
Ordinary smart watches do a little of everything. They are relatively sleek, have a lot of health and activity tracking function, and are packed with phone-like features like a speaker and microphone to receive NFC and calls for mobile payments. Apple Watch,, and upcoming belongs to this category.
However, as the name suggests, hybrid watches usually combine the qualities of analog watches and smart watches. They look more like ordinary clocks with traditional faces with physical hands for hours and minutes instead of digital numbers. Hybrid watches don’t have that many “smart” features, but they usually last longer with a single charge and still have a lot of health tracking options.
I prefer traditional smart watches and usually wear a watch. But spending a few weeks with the $ 500 Withings ScanWatch Horizon reminded me of why hybrid smartwatches can be attractive, as well as how weak they are compared to general-purpose smartwatches.
My phone is locked
As I switched from the Apple Watch to ScanWatch Horizon, I felt more confident in my phone. Withings’ hybrid clock can display notifications (such as calls, texts, and software alerts), and you can also use the clock to set timers and alarms.
But even these basic tasks are easier to perform in traditional hours. ScanWatch Horizon is not ideal for reading full notifications, as it has a small round screen that covers only part of the watch’s face. As I wroteScanWatch Horizon’s lack of a touch screen and voice controls also made it easier for me to set time and alarms.
If you want a smart watch that can carry part of your luggageWhen it comes to day-to-day work, ScanWatch probably isn’t. Think of ScanWatch Horizon first as a clock and then as a smartwatch. Although not mine I joined my data plan, it is still a useful surrogate for my phone. While waiting for the elevator, I don’t have to take my phone out of my pocket for tasks like answering text messages, looking at news headlines, or checking in at the local Rite Aid checkout.
Not so in ScanWatch Horizon. When I heard the notification, I almost immediately picked up the phone. ScanWatch Horizon feels more like a fashion accessory with built-in health tracking. I loved the way it looked on my wrist, but I didn’t use the screen for anything other than checking time or starting a workout. Most of my work takes place in the Withings HealthMate program, which shares body size and activity.
ScanWatch Horizon is more limited than the Apple Watch in terms of mimicking the functionality of your phone, but it has a distinct advantage. With a stainless steel body, a rotating laser engraved frame and an analog watch face, the ScanWatch Horizon is one of the most elegant smart watches you can find. It is also cheaper than the stainless steel version of the Apple Watch Series 7, which starts at $ 700.
Amazing battery life
The Apple Watch may be smarter, but it can’t get close to the life of a ScanWatch Horizon battery. Withings claims that the ScanWatch Horizon can last up to 30 days on a single charge, which is far superior to standard smart watches. In my experience, ScanWatch Horizon’s battery ran out of 35% after a week. I haven’t spent enough time with him to see if he fits Inings’ 30-day claim, but it’s still impressive.
The, on the other hand, usually lasts a day or two on a single charge. But it’s also because the Apple Watch has more technology. Compared to the small screen of ScanWatch Horizon, a single OLED color touch screen has a great impact on the battery. Some other plug-in devices, such as the Garmin Venu 2 Plus, which also uses OLED displays, can last up to nine days. It is possible to get more battery life than today’s smart watches without giving up the bright color display.
Both hours are deep in terms of health, but have different strengths
If there is one area where none of the hours are compromised, it is health monitoring. ScanWatch Horizon andit can also measure all the significant health indicators found in high-end smartwatches. This includes electrocardiogram (ECG or ECG) measurements – every two hours are FDA approved for this feature – and general heart rate data, activity and exercise, sleep and blood oxygen saturation levels. Withings’s blood oxygen properties Unlike Apple.
When it comes to health tracking, although they share many similarities, smart watches have their strengths. For example, Withings has more sleep information. You can see how much time you spend in light or deep sleep, moderate sleep heart rate, and respiratory disorders. It also provides sleep scores that assess the quality of your sleep, similar to Fitbit products.and Amazon.
The Apple Watch only shows sleep duration, time spent in bed, and sleep respiration rate. This information is also helpful, but access to information about my sleep quality helps me understand why I feel tired or energetic in the morning. It also encourages me to hit the sack sooner than usual if my sleep score isn’t very high lately.
The design of the Apple Watch gives it an advantage over the Withings ScanWatch Horizon in several other areas. It’s smaller and lighter, which makes the Apple Watch more comfortable to wear and sleep with during training (although I usually charge the Apple Watch at night). In addition, the Apple Watch has a built-in GPS to track external runs, and ScanWatch Horizon must rely on your phone’s GPS. The Apple Watch is also more effective at encouraging me to be active during the day because I can personalize the screen to show my Action Rings.
Withings ScanWatch Horizon inherits some of the biggest advantages of analog watches: high-end design and a battery that does not need to be recharged every night. It is also the highest level fitness tracker and does not require a subscription to unlock more in-depth information like devices.and Oura.
That didn’t convince me to move away from more traditional smartwatches like the Apple Watch. Rather than having a watch that looks best, I value the convenience of verbally applying or answering texts from my wrist to start training with my watch. I could have appreciated the chosen design of the ScanWatch Horizon more in 2013, when smart watches still looked like this. Now that smartwatches are smaller and lighter and more common, they don’t look out of place on your wrist at weddings and dinners.
ScanWatch Horizon is ideal for those who want both a classic watch and a fitness tracker on one device. I understand why some may prefer the simplicity of ScanWatch Horizon, because that means the watch itself is less distracting. But the Apple Watch works better to free you from your phone, and that’s more important to me.
