“Farming body lotions are unfortunately not miraculous creams,” says Adrian O’Connell, DO, medical director and president of Laguna Beach Aesthetics. “They often help thicken the top layer of skin, which can temporarily tighten and smooth the skin.”
As “skin firming” is used as an umbrella term, there are some different skin concerns that you can reach for this type of product. Think: Creepiness, sagging, cellulite, and stretch marks. Unfortunately, formulas are not necessarily built to treat them all, so it is important to understand their limitations before investing – especially since not many of them are cheap. Keep reading for professionals who want to know you.
How body lotion works to strengthen the skin
Dr. As O’Connell mentioned, most skin strengthening products target the upper layer of your skin, called the epidermis. While these formulas may give you temporary tightness, to see lasting results, you need to use ingredients that stimulate collagen and elastin production down a layer in the dermis.
“You want to make your dermis as strong as possible,” says Corey L. Hartmann, a board-certified dermatologist, founder and medical director of Skin Wellness Dermatology in Birmingham, Alabama. “You don’t necessarily want the epidermis to be [thick] Because that’s the part that changes every two weeks. “
Generally, professionals recommend pairing over-the-counter products with office treatments for best results, but there are some ingredients that can hit that skin layer with their own hands. Retinol is considered the gold standard, as it is “the only active ingredient shown to make skin thicker and thinner,” he said. Says O’Connell. Peptides can also help, as they strengthen the skin to improve elasticity and firmness, and “play a key role in helping our skin cells produce collagen, reduce inflammation, and even tone the skin.” Says O’Connell. He suggests combining these powerhouse activators with antioxidants such as Vitamin C and CoQ10 (which fight free radical damage to prevent inflammation) for extreme efficacy.
How Skin Lotion Affects Different Skin Concerns
If wrinkles are your primary concern, your body skin can benefit from the same techniques you use on your face. “Chemical exfoliants like glycolic acid exfoliate and tighten the skin,” says Dr. Says O’Connell. Dr. Hartmann recommends combining a chemical exfoliant that lubricates the upper layers of the skin with retinol, which stimulates collagen and elastin in the dermis.
Would using this combination of ingredients completely reduce wrinkles? Probably not. But applying them regularly in combination with SPF can help soften existing lines and prevent new ones from forming.
REPLENIX Retinol Smooth + Tighten Body Lotion – $ 89.00
This luscious body lotion contains retinol to strengthen the deeper layers of the skin, while ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and proprietary green tea polyphenol technology work in a coordinated manner to moisturize, thicken, and protect the upper layers of the skin from oxidative stress.
2. Skin peeling
As a person ages, the combination of gravity and the low production of collagen and elastin in our skin can slow down both the face and the body. “Peptides help stimulate more collagen, which can make skin look stronger, younger,” he said. O’Connell says peptides are the “most effective” ingredient in strengthening dull skin.
Revision Skincare® BodiFirm – 150.00
Board-certified dermatologist Deirdre Hooper, MD, uses this skin-firming lotion to fight sgging on your hands and feet. “While I’m really good at using this product, and I’ve been using it daily for at least a month, I see an overall improvement in the quality of my skin,” she said. “And I think that’s because of the ingredients that blend many tons of topical cosmetics. Most importantly, a peptide blend that is believed to improve skin tone and elasticity and antioxidants and herbs that will be anti-aging and help prevent any further shedding. . “
“Creepy skin occurs when your skin becomes thinner and loses its ability to return to normal after stretching,” Andrew Arden, MD, FACS, a California-based plastic surgeon, previously told Well + Good. “It affects large areas, unlike wrinkles, which usually look like facial expressions such as smiling, scratching or peeling. It affects the texture of the skin, consequently affecting the texture of the skin as opposed to gray creases or lines. Also known as wrinkles.”
Dr. O’Connell named retinol as one of the most effective ingredients for crappy skin. “Retinol enters the middle layer of your skin, making the skin ‘firm’ or ‘thick’ by increasing the production of elastin and collagen,” she says. “It can also improve skin texture and tone.” However, Dr. Hartmann adds that there are many things retinol can do, so your best bet is to combine retinol-infused body lotions with in-office treatments such as coolscapling or radiofrequency.
4. Stretch marks
According to Ocloplastic Surgeon, MD FACS, Christopher Joumalan, “Stretch marks are considered a type of scar, and although there is no visible incision to heal, stretch marks create deep tears within the skin.”
These “blemishes” affect both the color and texture of your skin. To reduce extinction, Drs. Zoumalan recommends using tranexamic acid, which has been shown to improve hyperpigmentation almost as effectively as hydroquinone (a stain-lightening substance banned for sale in the United States), and arbutin, which is known for its brightening properties. To ease the texture, retinol (once again) is a solid alternative. But while these materials can help, they probably won’t make your stretch marks disappear completely.
If you are looking for a more aggressive treatment, there are some in-office options to consider. “Deep radiofrequency lasers and deep resurfacing lasers like Fraxel, CO2, and microneedling can stimulate collagen and elastin fibers to form under the skin,” says Rachel Nazarian, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York. “These are wonderful tools for improving and reducing the appearance of stretch marks, and I have had great success in treating many of my patients.”
Skinuva Brite – $ 80.00
This cream contains both tranexamic acid and niacinamide, two ingredients that work together to improve skin tone and reduce stretch marks and blemishes.
Many people think that moisturizing the skin is the key to reducing cellulite (which, in turn, affects 90 percent of women in their lifetime). Dr. According to Hartmann, however, there is not much merit in this theory. The reason? Cellulite occurs when the skin puts on fat cells, and skin strengthening creams don’t work much because they don’t penetrate deep enough to change the texture of the skin.
One way you Can Strengthen your skin by strengthening the lower muscles. Dr. “On the face, muscle tone is not as important as we use to eat, chew and express ourselves,” says Hartman. “But in the body, the muscles are much larger, and they can help provide better structure.”
However, it is important to note that using muscle-strengthening and skin-tightening creams does not guarantee cellulite relief. If this is something that bothers you, the only way to get treatment at the office is to include radio frequencies, injectables, or hot-and-massage contouring.
